Over the past year SBCO has organised 21 concerts for more than 400 people in hospitals, nursing and residential homes, and sheltered housing units right across the Scottish Borders.
The repertoire has ranged from Scottish and Irish airs, to tunes from musical and operas, to classical and jazz pieces.
The performers are all SBCO volunteers who can make the time to share their music-making talents with those who would otherwise have little opportunity to enjoy live performance.
Recitals usually last between 40 and 45 minutes, and are designed to suit a variety of tastes and interests. Where possible, members of the audience are encouraged to join in some of the songs. Even some of the more frail or elderly residents are often seen with lips moving silently, heads nodding, or fingers tapping in time, as their own musical memories are awakened.
This type of outreach is an integral part of SBCO’s work in the Borders – aiming to make music accessible to people in all situations, and to provide opportunities for players to make music together. New participants are always welcome, either as individuals or as a group.
If you would like to request a visit from some of SBCO’s players, or would like to become involved in SBCO’s care home programme as a volunteer, please contact SBCO.
